In honor of the late Kelly Kulina, Baseball Factory was proud to once again host the Kelly Kulina Classic this past August. Kelly touched the lives of thousands through his community involvement, coaching career and work at Baseball Factory. During his time at the Factory, he was instrumental in helping hundreds of aspiring student-athletes achieve their dream of playing college baseball.
The two-day event featured eight of the best travel programs in the Mid-Atlantic region. In addition to showcasing top-level talent, the event also serves as an annual fundraiser for the Kulina Children's Education Fund. The fund was established to assist Kelly’s children in pursuing college educations and all proceeds from the Classic are donated directly to the fund. This year we were proud to raise $4,000 in donations! Kelly’s family was on-hand for the opening ceremony and daughter Lavin threw out the first pitch.
Participating teams included: All-Star Baseball Academy, Allegheny Pirates, Mid-Maryland Red Sox, Mid Atlantic Red Sox Prospects, Mid-Atlantic Rookies, Oriolanders, Tidewater Orioles and Virginia Shamrocks. The rosters were filled with talent, which brought out over 20 coaches and scouts including ACC power-house University of North Carolina and a Los Angeles Dodgers area scout. One of the featured players, Brendan McKay of the Allegheny Pirates, really impressed scouts. Brendan is verbally committed to Louisville; he flashed top velocity, a strong delivery and the confidence to attack quality hitters which also makes him a top prospect for 2014 draft.
